Why Bone Health is important

Did you know…. that 90% of your bone density is formed by the age of 18? And the remaining 10% is by age 30. Osteoporosis is a young person’s disease that shows in older people. So it is important that you help develop strong bones and good bone density in your early years.

How can you do this?

Calcium and Vitamin D are important in developing bone density. If you cannot get adequate from your diet, you may need to speak with your doctor or a nutritionist to find ways to get more into your body. Some foods like dairy, green leafy vegetables, fish, and tofu can aid in calcium levels. Vitamin D can be found in eggs, liver, and fatty fish, as well as by heading outdoors and absorbing sunlight onto your skin (be careful of UV rays and only do this when UV is lower).

Zinc is also important - this can be found in oysters, red meat, and poultry. For vegetarians, it can be found in whole grains, beans, and nuts.

Strengthening your muscles also aids in bone density, and your muscles and bones are connected. Regular weight training will help you build muscle tone and strength.
