Finding your WHY

Do you know what your real motivation is? We often talk about things we want to achieve (in life, career, health, and relationships), but we often start out with great intentions but lose motivation quickly.

Finding your WHY is an important part of achieving your success. If you know WHY you need or want to achieve your goal, and that means something to you, then you are more likely to do what is needed to reach that goal.

But how do you find your motivator? I often hear clients say they want to lose weight. But why? Many say they want to fit into their old clothes again or to look better. But is that really the reason?

What I do with my clients is dig down deeper to find the real motivator - that thing that will keep you going when you don’t feel like it. Will get you moving when you can’t be bothered and to say no to chips and chocolate.

The first thing you need to do is write down your main goal - the one thing you wish to achieve in the next year. (remember this can be about life, travel, career, relationships, and not just about health - but I will use a health goal as an example).

  • Let’s say you want to fit into your old jeans. Write that down as your goal.

  • Then write the word “WHY”. Next to that write why it is important for you to fit into those jeans. It might be because you felt great when you wore those jeans in the past.

  • Now right the word “WHY” again. Next to that write why it is important for you to feel great in those jeans again. It may be because you felt confident and positive about life.

  • Write the word “WHY” again, and why it is important for you to feel confident and positive about life - it may be because you want your daughter to see you happy and confident and to be fun to be around.

  • Again write the word “WHY”, and why feeling happy and confident and fun to be around is important to you. This time it might be as you want to be a positive role model for your daughter.

So you can see from this example, that the real goal isn’t to fit into your old jeans (that will be a measure for our success), but the goal is to be a positive role model for your daughter. So whenever you don’t feel like training, or want to reach for the chocolate bar, it will be your daughter that will be your motivator to stay on track and not the jeans.

Use this method of asking “WHY” 4-5 times to really dig down into what is your true reason for wanting to achieve your goals - then watch your success happen. :)
