How to handle continued lockdowns

I know it can feel like groundhog day - here we go again. Another lockdown, more restrictions, life seems out of our control. Yes, it is tough - and it’s important to acknowledge that. Businesses are closing, people are struggling. I wish I could wave a magic wand and help everyone and have answers for everyone on how to cope at the moment - but everyone is different and everyone will react in a different way.

So while I don’t have specific answers for you on this topic, here are some tips that might help you survive another lockdown.

  • Try to remain positive - focus on the good things happening around you. Is it more time with your family, more time to chat on the phone with the friends you haven’t caught up with in a long time, the ability to try new activities at home with the kids.

  • Do daily gratitude - being thankful for what you do have rather than focusing on what you can’t have makes a big difference to your mental health. Every morning remind yourself of 3 things you are grateful for in your life.

  • Talk - don’t bottle up your emotions. Make sure you speak with someone you trust about how you are feeling. Remember it is ok to not feel ok at this time. But it is important that you speak with someone and get professional help if needed.

  • Stay active - movement and exercise is so important in helping your mental health and clarity. Take your allocated time (currently 2 hours) of exercise and head outdoors. Even if it is just a 30 minute walk around the neighborhood it will clear the head a little. It is also important to spend time out of the house if you are there all day.

  • Limit news and social media - while we want to stay up to date with what is happening, too much can be too distressing. Limit the amount of time you are watching the news or scrolling social media. The more negatives we see, the worse we feel. Spend the time instead on an activity or with the family.

  • Take up a new hobby - it’s a great time to start a new hobby - singing, dancing, painting, learn a language - there are limitless ideas open for you at this time.

Hang in there - this isn’t forever, so try to make the best of the current situation and create positive memories for the future.
